Helping Al Rio’s Family
Completed the deal on 5 Al Rio pieces: delivery ETA Fri Oct 30. I discovered a kickstarter called Antoinette, which raised $17,000 in funds, and published physical comics ( 4 of the covers are on the way).
The seller of the Al Rio pieces, said the money would help his family; I had not known Al Rio had passed until I looked him up. I had admired his art since I discovered it in 1999, the facial expressions, and female anatomy. I looked up his other work. It took 2 days, to sift through 3 sellers auction listings, ( thousands of items), finding hundreds of Zenoscope covers*
* series that he did ( Exposure, Exposed; Gen -13; Jungle Girl). There were so many stunning covers, that I hadn’t seen before ( I wasn’t collecting comics during 1999, till recently. I made an effort, to find covers for reference – didn’t realize how much there was to see.
I asked the same seller**, to hold several sketches, and posters – sounds like they directly help his family.
**He seems to have some relationship with Al Rio’s family. Hopefully, later in November -December, I have the funds to get some more original art, there are a handful more pieces, that would be amazing references; maybe the Al Rio family, is selling their personal collection, on consignment, through this seller.
From the style of his works ( sort of cartoonish, and very lithe, young looking women, in their 20’s) I assumed Al Rio was younger than me. It is really special, how his artworks, inspire a sense of timeless vigor, associated with his name, even after he has passed.
Seeing the way the Kickstarter for Antoinette looks, gives me an example of how to set up there; and what to hopefully expect. Very encouraging, that physical printed comics books can be fund raised, and become valuable, rare items, generating, a subscriber base of comic collectors, and related material; prints, stickers ect.
I definitely have a lot of ideas, on how to best utilize the broadcast rights voice actress, to make simple, mainstream promos, with lurid horror content. ( gore, nudity is clearly acceptable; when there is a story that has more to offer). The aforementioned can be done at high quality, and the latter can reach a mainstream audience.
Alot of what I have been doing for the last year, is studying and acquiring quality references; and brainstorming story, character, concepts, for brands, and ways to market them.
It will be really fulfilling, to see the completed, painted, digitally colored character designs, scenes, sequences, story (drama) panels, as the scripts, and ideas develop into visuals; that eventually, will be enough, to make a quality comic book out of that: A) represents the mission statement ( meaningful adventure, characters; stunning nudity and gore), in a tasteful and professional presentation, that men and women are interested in. B) has the best quality I can bring to the story, and art.
For the past year or so, I have been drawing at a rate, that a professional mainstream penciller, doing 22 pages at 11 x 17″ a month would. Since I am planning to do colors, and inking soon, as well as an advanced editing, and developing a script ( whose detail resembles a screenplay), some of the ‘output levels’ of any given monthly ‘quota’ of a category, will naturally, be taken up by time spent on the other mandatory ingredients to create:
A) finished vo script, B) concept art C) detailed concepts D) storyboards for official episodes ( relating to finished script) E) pencilling, with quality references, panel by panel F) inking with variety of inking tools G) Using CSP for Digital editing, variations, and color H) lettering, the final dialogue, and narrative I) utilizing the voice acted audio, from the script, to have a visual novel version of the comicbook J) make promotion trailers combining the art, and audio K) Setting up and running the kickstarter, and other social media fundraising tools – to fund ‘physical’ production of comicbooks; to mail supporters L) Make dozens of variant covers; produce autographed prints, merchandise M) Make video games N) Make toys
Currently I’m working on A- G.
Thanks for your interest and patronage which keeps this endeavor rewarding, and supports the upcoming work!
I look forward to doing new studio work soon *
*After I catch up my sleep ( over the next few day ) – now that I have sifted through hundreds of Al Rio covers, other Zenoscope artists, and the Kickstarter ‘ Antoinette’ ( which is a great example of a successful marketing to the general public, of a lurid horror classic), I have a good sense of the market, and how to develop content for it – and present it to public audiences.
Story Telling
Mission Statement
The goal, is as stated in the outset, to create a sci-fi/fantasy ( sword sorcery / sci fi body horror: ie Aliens, ) that is interesting in and of itself ( professional quality ); that doesn’t omit lurid pre code horror scenes, as they occur in the overall story.
So many presentations, in modern galleries, by individual artists, have minimal, if any story, or plot. Lack of detail, or time, spent even for backgrounds, costumes, expressions; sometimes lacking basic drawing skills.
