Updates

I have new studio art I will be posting*every other day.   I plan to schedule posts, so that I have a steady stream of content.

My goal is to start detailing, and inking pieces, to color digitally, then post here; and began to post brand specific content to build audiences (under respective brands).

During the past 6 months, I posted everything I did, as I did it. In the spirit of sharing as generously as possible, what I worked on, in real time.

Sometimes 14 pages at a time. While trying to write scripts, splice audio, practice digitally coloring – acquire vintage items at auction, and do 2 days worth of physical chores.

This was fine, until there is a birthday, or a pet health crisis, unexpected family event or visitor, ect. )  Also, by timing posts, at a steady pace, it encourages me to take time to detail and finish pieces in progress ( rather than move on to more ideas, and pages).

( during Oct I had a relative visit – while I was upgrading the studio )

Adaptations

Process – Studio Method:

My current method, is to brainstorm ideas, ( rough sketches) – when I have them*.

* I feel alot of the work in this genre, tends to lack attention to detail ( costumes, story, characters which exist outside of the lurid sequence)

The aspects currently left blank (or rough:  dialogue, backgrounds,  supporting cast, clothing: final inks, color) are ones, that in my experience, take an amount of time, that can be done as traditional art ( sometime later).  The goal is to go back and develop these aspects, ( some have been revisited and shared).

I think most artists move on from a piece, for arbitrary factors of fatigue ( momentary hunger, time to sleep, events in the day); my observation, is that giving open ended amounts of time, to approach a piece, repeatedly can generate some remarkable quality.    More of a painter’s approach.

Since the unique aspect to the genre( ie, as a viewer) what separates it from mainstream, are lurid scenes;  I work on poses, sequences, related to it.

After exploring and reaching as broad a scope as I can with the expressions, physiques, and lurid scene related dialogue; with the ideas on paper;  I can more systematically approach ‘finishing’* artwork.

Some practical reasons:  the traditional art aspects, eventually, can be reused ( like cartoon bkg layers), elevating the finished product.  But the time it takes to create finished anything (ink, color), is about a week or 2.  So, I find myself, making sure to have some new sketches to post here weekly ( prioritizing it – until I get ahead:  then taking time to complete a logo, or develop, what in isolation are the mainstream aspects). There is only so much time in the day.

The ideas for stories, costumes, sequences ( layouts) are ephemeral, and easy to no longer visualize ( easy to forget ),  that’s why I have predominantly sketches.

The ideas I have, unbidden, are usually the most worthy of developing, so its a process alot like writing down dreams before they are forgotten; then doing studio art ( redrawing, detailing;  typing plot summaries)

In pencilling first –   I am basically following the advice of someone I know who worked with a comic book studio, and prioritizing pencilling the breadth of the sequences ( improving the drawings, doing studies ).

When I ink, ( I can refer to ink styles of various famous artists) , – it is more of a performance ( no erasing in the moment).  I just recently cleaned out 2 rotring rapidographs ( soaking for 24 hours, and got them inking well; with fresh cartridges)

Coloring digitally, will be a vast amount of time on the pc;  not using my chief skill ( drawing)- which is another reason, it’s low on the priority list. ( I don’t need to have script, design, reference ideas, while coloring)

But that’s when the work will be noticed by the most viewers ( I think, a large amount of viewers almost don’t see images, if they aren’t colored, while searching)

It’s a work in progress in with multifaceted, time ( skill) requiring aspects, for the scope I have in mind, so I appreciate having viewers and supporters like you in the meantime.

*  ( inking, and coloring doesn’t require the amount of immersion;  ie, I can listen to music, workout, interact with people, while ‘finishing art’, for the days and weeks it takes: )
