Updates
Sun May 10 , 2020 – (1:43pm) Updated to Word Press 5.4.1.
I completed good studio work for a couple days, and was getting up early and strong.*** I backed up the site**** – in preparation to upgrade wordpress. I saw some really simple html ‘click’ page ‘games. May make a simple game ‘flowchart’ ( link).
**** which takes several hours to be ready for download from dreamhost – then several more hours to download to my PC.
Getting ahead of my various responsibilities – including this website. I sorted from a collection of videos, and uploaded one for each week, through Aug***
**( it’s more efficient, once all the pages are open, to make as many as I can)
I sifted through the internet, for any related references; ie videos*
*Often video links expire, so I check periodically ( every several months) – it’s time consuming, but I try to search everywhere for any useful references (images, videos). For 3 hours and half.
Honoring Legends
My favorite form of story, and art, is fantasy art ( like Boris Vallejo, Joe Jusko) and the fantasy adventures of the 80’s. So, without having a grudge against Dolcett, I simply prefer fantasy adventures, with alot of characters, and fantastic events. At the end of the day, I want every one to be as happy, and healthy as they can be. Excessive blood, and gore, are not interesting to me of themselves.
But, the practice of television, and misleading covers – The omission of implied scenes, does generate interest, and appreciation for their rarity: ie in Pre-Code horror comic covers, and movie scenes. That, to me is the essence of what I envisioned with LuridMax. The spirit of truth. Show, what is oft implied. Get over the stigma, that results in mediocre work, being elevated, because of scarcity. As scene in video games like Skyrim, and Mortal Kombat, eventually, it is simply seen for what it is, and loses the taboo. It’s the stigma of taboo, that gives more appeal to everything regardless of quality.
Story Telling
Reference Collages:
This is something I’ve been doing, that helps me to get combo ideas saved, before I forget ( because its faster than drawing them as I think of them). I can later go back, and use these references, to create illustrations, that are a combination of elements.
I only post these so you can see what I have planned. The 19 x 24″‘s are my favorite size, and I try to work at that size whenever I have uninterrupted* studio time.
* Certain physical tasks, and events that require long concentration, or fatigue my arms, require 2 days of rest, before I use the 19 x 24 “.
Tasks
Some tasks I completed this month, for the longevity of the website, and endeavor, in general: 1) acquired vintage Pre-Code Horror/ Golden Age comics ( auction)
- I have enough for 2 years worth of study ( covers, and interiors)*
- Set up pages for the upcoming year ( so I can concentrate on the new comics/ games/ animations/coloring/)
This should be enough, to satisfy my effort, to try as hard as artists like Todd Macfarlane, at developing my ‘pencilling’ so that a professional editor (for a publisher) will hire me. In the meantime, creating a body of new, original lurid pre-code horror content; informed and inspired by the legendary artists of the pre-code era to present.
The vintage covers/panels, substantiate Lurid Max, during the Season Three campaign, as grounded in the Lurid Pre-Code Horror style. To me, it’s an important archival project; sharing the culture, and legends of my youth, to present generations who may have never known of them.
Auctions
As Kevin Smith, describes, I ‘threw my hat over the wall’; meaning, I invested more than I am comfortable to, in giving as much added motivation, to get there.* This takes effort, which is what I am able to do.
*The pro, is really, that I try my hardest. The potential con, I either don’t make enough to afford the investment** ( if the government doesn’t give me my EIC, UI stipend, and stimulus deposit – all of which I have yet to receive) , don’t get hired within the time frame I desire.
**( which can be dealt with by selling them on ebay; balance transfers; getting another job; 4 months working entry level labor, would balance my budget) More incentive, to get the comics, games, promo art, done, as best I can; for social media campaigns, to generate funds. The overall thrust, is to get used to the idea of making as much as a professional, so that I will work toward accomplishing it.
I am in a special position, from all my training and discipline – I can create a body of work, that will be something I can benefit and share, for decades to come. I’d rather get all the references I think I can handle ( and risk biting off more than I chew) – rather than discover, later, I am too busy, when I can comfortably afford it later -but no longer have the time.
My goal, is to ink, and color the 19 x 24’s; and redraw on watercolor paper, and/or canvas, to make into paintings. I am content, to get the studio work done; and then promote later**. Last year was a ‘first time’ for using internet galleries, and self-promotion for lurid/adult art. I learned, and have an idea how to make the most of the new opportunities; after I create the best new art work I can.
After taking a look at galleries I have posted on, seeing the new work by other artists, I am motivated to make some game flowcharts. This month, my goal will be to set up some pages, with text, and audio ( or notations for audio); splice audio from voice actresses, to use for this. And schedule my time, so I can start regularly using: inks, graphic touch screen tablet ( for CSP color), and paints (color pencils, watercolor, acrylic).
Adaptations
1st Appearances: The value to me , artistically/creatively, in the first appearances, is knowing there was no representation of the character before this. The character started looking this way, and with this premise; giving insight into the trajectory for the story arcs, and how much it developed.
Also, the history of the character, begins here. So fans, experts, essentially, have the same info, if they collected since the 1st appearance. When someone knows more than you, there is a potential for an overestimation of what they know. In fan art, there seem to be passionate, and opinionated expressions related to iconic characters; rather than relying on only the most recent versions, the 1st appearance, gives a tangible scope; allowing for more, fresh interpretations of the character; and benefiting from what got the character established.
Gratitude
I’m so glad, to have interested viewers support this endeavor, so I can spend as much time as possible creating new content.
Thank You!
