Story Telling
Since, so many artists ( 2-d; not referring to poser, cgi) appear to not put in the time*;
* either lacking the discipline, or training, background, or wherewithal, to render more than a one time, loose, depiction; usually mediocre anatomy, sloppy in some regard, and without thought or effort to anything in the composition:
all their images look similar, and the effect is disappointing*.
*( there are of course, great artists, and I regularly, discover inspiring examples; this is just a discourse on what Lurid Max is striving to do; a goal; not a vain assertion; merely observation that the lack of craftsman ship of many, is a motivation, to create higher quality).
Adaptations
Put 200 comics ( 1990’s, highschool collection) into bags and boards.*** I completed a deal for 3 more Al Rio original art, 2 posters and 2 prints****. A George Perez piece, is nearly ready to ship.
Tomorrow, I hope to get the studio (upgrade) chores complete, ASAP.
In my opinion, Al Rio has some of the best facial expressions I’ve seen in comics, for beautiful idealized women. Owning these ( taking the time, and effort to get these delivered) allows me to use my strengths as an artist, to improve the expressiveness in my art, through direct study of these originals ( he has taught classes, and has exemplary work).
On Sun, I have a family activity that takes up half the day. I estimate approx 6 hours would get my studio in shape ( for the holiday visitors, that I want to protect my vintage items, from****) I view the tasks required to create stunning artwork, as including reference gathering; the more informed, the better – there is only so much time in the day: I more enjoy drawing freehand, and the satisfaction of completing a status quo of posting; however, I am aware of ‘game changing’ acquisitions, for my skills in study ‘reproduction’, and the unique opportunity, to bring together, original art ( by famous legends in the industry; across history; vintage comics/prints/posters/figures, and original art) and reference study concentration.
This is the kind of foundation Jim Lee, Todd Macfarlane, and many others describe ( buying original art and comics, toys, at auctions, to study, and develop good looking, art; to the best of their ability). I am very grateful at the opportunity to work on this labor of love, with the highest quality resources I can afford, and share it with those who believed, and supported my art; in this Lurid Max project. Which during the pandemic, has been a very special blessing.
I have an idea for a “Quarantine World” series ( title subject to change), based on a series of comics and stories, I designed, in 2014; that seem particularly poignant in these times. [ that could be presented as a post apocalyptic, Walking dead, type epic, for mainstream horror, and good girl art]
I am getting to bed a little earlier each night, and feeling my energy ( concentration) increasing. I look forward to doing studio work, ( and not being concerned about stacks of valuable comics, ect, being accidentally bumped into, ect).
I’ve been listening/watching news, related to the upcoming U.S. election. I expect some art work that pleases me, as I start putting my time into studio art; utilizing the recent high quality references.
I have an idea for “Fumetti Fantasia”, presenting ‘remakes’ of the Eerie magazines. Every element of lurid pre-code horror, has been featured in the magazines that I have photographed. It will be a large audience, that I can reach – both fans of the Eerie magazines ( collectors, art dealers) and viewers of lurid art in general.
As a creator described his tribute to the batman serials of the 1930’s, “,..this is a love letter to the classic movie serials, ect…”. In that way, the idea of “Fumettia Fantasia” is not something in a position to be debated – since it is a remake. This empowers the project, bolstering it’s validity, as it opens, and keeps the association as a direct lineage to the Eerie Magazines. This keeps the expectation for the content to be professional, relevant to topic; and the discussion around it, to be historical, artistic, and grounded in nostalgia and respect.
It will take time, as it takes to get the various things done*****; I will update with what I have accomplished – and ETA’s.
I expect, by the week after the 1st week of Nov, I will be spending time on creating new art. If sooner, I will post the art here. ( and move this writing, to a ‘Word’ post.)
I will try to pace my posting of content better, so I have content prepared, for a smoother expected rate of posting – especially during the holidays; so unexpected visits, from desperate relatives ( during these unusual days), and the energy, and time that it takes to rise to the circumstance of their vulnerabilities, carelessness, and associated drama, to continue to be a force of good, for my loved ones, doesn’t easily derail my commitment to my art, this project and those who have invested resources, encouragement and interest in its development.
*{the main reason to get it ASAP: its from a Kickstarter, resold by supporters who contributed; limited – useful reference, for a genre included in lurid pre-code horror: I basically, want to be as well educated on the art in this category}
** I can post them later on. I can use them for reference to study ( as the seller agreed, the fullsize originals, show alot more detail, for quality study).
***Making space on the inking table ( after I tape them, and store them efficiently- eventually, putting them in a box, for later reference)
****it is easy for people to forget there are stacks of valuable, fragile comics and art, in my main studio/ room. Stacks of various states of processing – mainly, left vulnerable, to prioritize studio art production for posting here, prone to be leaned on; a cup set on a stack, or bumping into a stack. Since the last visit, I moved items ( for 2 days) into another room. After the visitor left, I saw the need to prioritize properly storing deliveries.
***** ie, create a logo ( worth coloring: after brainstorming ), study some Eerie ( covers, panels; as the interiors and scans already posted), remake some iconic images. Then create some ‘promos’ for DA, Pivix, Subscribe Star, ect. [ write some taglines, trailers, and voice actress phrases, to use in video ads]
I am building the largest thing I can – thanks for those supporting me in this endeavor! It will be satisfying to have some professional pieces ( with unique backgrounds, costumes, idealized physiques and expressions; styles of famous artists) completed, and marketed as a fresh brand ( ie Fumetti Fantasia)- and featured here, with Lurid Max specific content, exclusive here for Clandestine grass roots subscribers!
Gratitude
I hope you are well, and with everything going on in the world; I appreciate your kind patronage: Stay safe!
