Studio Upgrades:
Closer to complete, feeling good about getting the studio back in working order.
I had a few obstacles to getting my studio work flow capacity at optimum ( since the recent visit, I had moved items out, to make space for the quest to play video games non stop for a week; unplugging my tablet, and moving stacks of references to another location; stacks of childhood sportscards, including siblings, across a decade – I put nearly 200 into 9 pocket sheets, to clear off my main desk for processing vintage comics, and art * . Opened and photographed Evil Lyn ( filmation: Club Grayskull) MOTU figure, Marvel Diamond – Captain Marvel ‘Shield version’ diorama; photographed a 7.0 copy of Bobby Benson’s B- Bar-B riders #14.
*( photographing interiors, storing in mylar, with MIP, and BCE Life Xtenders.)
Honoring Legends
Al Rio items arrived. Past three days playing Overwatch ( for a couple hours) online with an associate. [ So far ‘Zarya’, ‘McCree’, ‘ Ana’, ] . Watched the 2nd Presidential Debate. ( I have to regularly delete txt messages from both parties – because I participated in polls; which apparently result in being on party mailing lists. Interesting, how both use similar high pressure tactics, and desperate pitches. I am largely ignorant of politics, regarding, campaign financing. We’ll see the outcome soon enough.
How an FPS game, can benefit the project:
Some insights into how ‘visual’ and ‘audio’ characteristics, can present a recognizable personality; even without an origin story; interesting, because, in real life encounters, we rarely hear the origin story of ‘characters’ we know, for their mannerisms, opinions and appearance. The robot designs, and 3-d animations, in this popular Blizzard game, could be useful to have elements which could be reimagined, as a higher quality robot design, for ideas I had. [ As well as screenshots, and fan art ]
Once I process the studio obstacles, I should be able to work on art ( now with more references available – in the deals I made the past week; Al Rio art (5pcs); Jose Delbo ( 1pc), and 3 more Al Rio pieces, as well as some prints and posters. Tomorrow I expect to complete a deal for 83 quality covers ( comics) to study [ alot of 90’s Deodato, Michael Turner, Jim Balent, ]. Planned, and contacted sellers, for deals on George Perez original art. That is about the extent of ambition to acquire original art for awhile. There were 2 George Perez pieces, that I have been watching ( from a comic I read growing up in the 1990’s); and a third piece I discovered, that would be uniquely useful for reference, and relevant to this project. I have a great sampling, of original art, acquired during a unique time in history ( in my opinion)- where sellers are offering some famous names, at desperate prices. I would assume, ( having watched the fair market value, drop in the past three months, to records lows) that next month, when economic stimulus packages are approved for American citizens, that sellers will be able to sell higher, as the majority have more money.
Having put in several years, of studying comicbook covers – and knowing the focus, discipline and stamina of concentration; it is an ideal opportunity, to own fullsize ‘original art’ to : a) make scans, and color practice ( digitally) b) study fullsize inking c) share in galleries ( use on an ebay store, to sell along side my original art products, my own personal drawings, and comics; another way for an audience to discover my work. )
( the sum total of studio improvements, affecting studio efficiency, are: a) stacks of 500 + comics from the 1990’s, that can put into new bags and boards, and into boxes, to free up space. b) the sportscards, into ultrapro 9 pocket sheets ( 500+ or more) c) stacks of newspapers, with photos I wanted to cut out, and study draw ( 3 feet high total, stack approx). d) the display case, for a premium format statue ( the boxes are significantly larger than the items, and taking up space where I normally sit and draw from the pc screen); I have unboxed one, and 1/4th built the white background layer over the completed cardboard wall structure.
I can still draw and post, without completing everything a- d; but wanted to give an idea of what I mean by studio obstacles. I can draw on the easel outdoors tomorrow ( possibly). Once, I get the premium statue, off the floor ( styrafoam), and the pieces off the table where the digital tablet goes, I can start CSP coloring again with the stylus; and put the styrafoam into the box, and put the box onto a shelf, making space for the easel; then put 2 6th scale model boxes, onto the remaining space on a shelf, and be able to use my inking desk ( and architects light box, to resume creating character/costume template, and inking). Once I get the cards into ultrapro 9 pocket sheets, I can access the 19 x 24 bristol board stack, for large drawings.
I can post some composition book sequences, tomorrow or in a few days – as well as some scanned apocrypha; photos of recent items acquired; some interiors; possibly video clips ( if I take the time to edit them, for the 64 mb, current Dreamhost plan, file size upload limit).
I am preparing to have easy access to 3-d ( statue, and action figure references), for variations of pose, physiques, forms, shading ( lighting), for character designs. And fullsize original art, with ideal, legendary mainstream artist’s, facial expressions, inking, and color.
Story Telling
In creating what I was not finding, but envisioned was possible ( ie, it occassionally appears in a high profile mainstream comic) without the censorship based scarcity or lurid pre code horror content.
The Eerie magazines, and vintage Pre-Code horror interiors give an idea of what comics can be like; that feature un apologetic lurid/pre code horror panels, in the context of professional quality stories.
Anecdotes:
My Labrador Husky, has been noticeably limping. I observed, she is compensating, putting all the weight on the right rear leg, and hopping with the left leg hardly touching the ground. I did some PT type range of motion, unlocked tight muscles around the pelvis and there seemed to be some progress. Her left hip made a loud crepitatious pop, and after the ‘assisted ‘ range of motion, I took her for a walk, and saw she was walking more evenly. The left leg seemed to need more effort to take steps, but it seemed to be a sign, she might rehabilitate the compensating gait – although seeming to be more conspicuous with each left leg step now, over time, perhaps, regaining better use of the left leg. I increased her meal source, to include boiled eggs, along with, pork and ground beef. And gave her a bath. ( about 2 hours this morning).
Adaptations
The “Antoinette” kickstarter, has set an example of the potential for ‘physically’ printed comic books, and opportunities for voice overs, and a framework for presentation, awards, and premise that is successful for reaching a larger mainstream audience. Overwatch, has given me ideas for video games ( character, menu, voice over, character emotes; skins); for gormax, Biresan, Drinna ( the Space combat stories) – ie FPS shooter, with upgradable , in game purchase, cinematics ( featured in use of certain items; weapons, locations, or outcomes).
The three “Antoinette “ covers arrived. Now that I got my scanner setup to the router again, I can scan them soon.
Gratitude
Thanks for your interest, and I look forward to developing new work.
