Mainstream comicbook Submission Project ‘Dystopia’: Process Part 1
I had imagined 2 weeks would be more than enough for 6 pages, pencilled, inked at 11 x 17”. But, being enthusiastic, and wanting to put together my best effort; I started to create new concept art. The many drawings of physiques, faces, and combos were generally beneficial for all projects.
As I matched faces with both classic and modern actors, I was able to find recent film, to take stills of views of the face nearly identical to panels. This began the ‘higher’ quality of portrait faces.
Loki: Maniacal villain vs. Sympathetic portrayal/ anti-hero
Continuing discourse on presentation:
If Loki in Marvel/Disney, is depicted killing humans, in Avengers 1, it makes sense to avenge them and Agent Coulson’s apparent death, by punishing Loki in accord. However, over the course of Thor 2, and 3, if Loki is presented more as an actor insert, and seems to be an amiable, witty character, who is positioned to help out the protagonists; it is easy to view Loki as a protagonist, and even patriotic, when he attacks Thanos.
However, if you juxtaposed his scene killing Coulson, and then being killed by Thanos, there would be a different feeling evoked, than the one evoked in Infinity War when Loki’s character is presented heroically. In Thor 2 and 3 Loki is presented as a wayward brother, orphan, living in the shadow of his more successful brother, who is trying to prove his value, and gain the respect/love of his father, and despite his villainous deeds, has strong feelings to avenge his adopted mother, and protect his adopted brother, and people. Loki in Avengers 1 is presented as a tyrant. Loki in Infinity War is presented heroically.
In the Works
In the Works, are ‘photos’ of pieces that are pending some development, for an unknown duration. They are mostly complete ( in the main figure) but ‘unfinished’, until I develop the following: a) background, supporting cast, costumes. Rather than rush, or complete without the aforementioned elements, I leave them until I have those elements to add.
In the works gives me an opportunity to share works that otherwise might not see the light of day for another 3 months- without extra delays in studio time ( by the relatively quick method of photographing, instead of scanning in sections – these are large pieces 19 x 24 “ – and connecting.).
Since the pieces are large, if there is a detailed section that can be scanned and connected by 2 pieces, worthy of higher -res in the meantime, I may do so.
