Old Process: New ideas in Composition books
When I set about building my new comicbook world; I decided on using a method of picking from the best of brainstorms over a period of time – rather than dedicate time detailing/promoting and dead-ending with the first idea. I used a shorthand drawing style, to quickly generate full comic layouts, and many variations for a plethora of characters.
Much of creating new ideas, comes unexpectedly, and off schedule – so having a repertoire of scripts/stories/ concept art enables more studio time drawing.
I organized The Atelier , Comicbook studio: Dystopia, Stranger Fiction in Bizarre Worlds, Congo Jongo, Witch’s War Hammers and Septendecim.
I have created a body of lore – by years of brainstorming and revision: ‘catching ‘ raw ideas; sometimes disrupting studio drawing time * – but enabling original content. Part of this process, is the freehand composition books.
*(the ideal drawing state, is with regular sleep and intermittent exercise. )
However, with years of practice, the Comp drawings are often, themselves, worth sharing – as they grow in quality – as freehand pieces.
Being on cheap paper, it encouraged me to try many dynamic variations, and sequences; 40 – 60 pages in a day; that I otherwise might not have; had I spent more time ‘finishing’ pieces.
Many of the original characters, have their origins in Comp sequences; and I have prepared some this week.
New Process: New ideas on 11 x 17 ” Bristol Board
Seeing the hours of time spent editing: the ink bleed through (from drawing on both sides), and undesirable ‘ruled’ paper lines; drawing directly onto 11 x 17 ” Bristol board becomes prudent.
I have some direct to Bristol board pieces in progress – rather than waste studio time, scanning, pieces that might be finished shortly, I can take ‘photos’, and give glimpses, at what is “In the Works” *. Since, to a developing/practicing artist, often, the ‘best works’ , have yet to be finished.
*(Legacy Members will have access to the thumbnails. Subscribers will have access to fullsized photos; with the current month’s password.)
Writing: Story and Scripts
Working with a writer on ‘Dystopia’ * since Feb 2019, has improved my script writing craft, expectations, for my scripts, and thus overall comicbook world. Knowing the details** for myself, that are most likely to be retained; I can describe with some context, scenes in illustrations
*( two person team of mainstream writer’s determined to submit to every major publisher) ** ( Rather that post frame by frame scripts in progress; spoiling any mystery or suspense )
Thanks to your interest, much of the Apocrypha has been prepared to color; New characters presented; lore, and script designed. The mainstream comicbook concept art/layout process has given me experience, and confidence, I can bring out my new content at a level I had envisioned.
